Host: John is a really nice host who tries to make the stay for his guests as comfortable as possible. He also agreed on a change of the check-in and check-out time which was really comfortable for us.
Apartment: The apartment is nice and clean and exactly as advertised, so there are no unintended surprises.
Room: Our room was small and without a window, but luckily the air conditioning cools down the room very quickly. Otherwise it would not have been possible to stay two by two for a whole week there. The mattress was not in best condition and squeaked every time we tried to turn. The sheets were pretty new and the towels cozy and fluffy. Unfortunately the apartment has three more rooms, so, in a total there is space for up to 12 people. On our last two days all rooms were fully booked so it was crowded not only in the kitchen/living room, but also very difficult two use the bathroom because it was occupied every other time.
Environment & Equipment: The kitchen is equipped with the essential stuff for cooking an easy meal but with only two stove plates on a camping cooker it takes some time to get your meal finished. There is a dining table with space for for people, also there are two extra chairs if needed. The television is working, there are about 15 channels accessible, but you have to deal with temporary time-outs. As we were on the go all the time, this was no big deal for us at all.
Location: We enjoyed the great location and the closeness to China Town and Little Italy although sleeping during the weekend is pretty hard due to festivals and celebrations on the street. Three different subways are avilable at Canal Street, which is only a three minutes walk away.
Conclusion: We definitely enjoyed our stay at John's place. He answers inquiries immediately and helps you with every upcoming concern. As we are planning to return to New York someday a room in his apartment (maybe next time with window) will be our first choice.
Mike, the guy who is linving in the house is a nice guy, however John ask us for more money than the web request.
Our apartment rental on Wimdu went pretty much exactly as planned. We found something we liked; we checked availability; we booked; John got back to us promptly; we confirmed; we showed up (very late, as the flight into JFK was delayed) and we had an apartment to ourselves for 10 days, without a hitch.
Okay, there was one glitch with the heating in the apartment, which could have been a disaster, as the temperature was beastly cold when we arrived -- but John had taken care of it already by bringing in some portable heaters, and the problem was sorted out by the next day.
The apartment was more or less what we expected from the description and the photos, so there were no issues there. The wireless internet was very good. The location in Chinatown is great -- and the little Chinese bakery downstairs became our regular breakfast haunt. The one drawback (which of course we were aware of from the description before we booked) was that there's no washing machine in the apartment. But there are a number of laundromats (both self-serve and drop off) around the block, so dealing with laundry just needs some planning.
The location is perfect for a pan-New York visit. The apartment is close to the Canal St subway (which links you to pretty much everywhere) and is a stone's throw from the Manhattan Bridge with downtown Brooklyn just across the river. Great restaurants are right on the doorstep and fantastic shopping is within walking distance.
John and his contact person Mike were both very helpful and we had no issues there.
New York is always a great experience, and despite the cold, this time was no exception!
Great place and Mike was really nice! The appartment itself was very clean and I really liked that there were 2 seperate double beds. We had to share the bathroom and kitchen with 3 others, but this never caused any problems, since we could sign in for the bathroom each morning. The appartment is also almost next to a subway station, so you can easily travel all through Manhattan. Only downside of it that there was one window, but this could not be opened... Overall a great place for a good prize!
The room was really warm in comparison to the heavy cold weather outside. The bathroom and the kitchen was pretty clean. The neighborhood was safe and beautifull.
However our room was very very small and uncomfortable, it was never cleaned up and the towels were the same during the whole days of our stay. What is more, no only we never saw the owners of the appartment but also John (with whom we only spoke via viber/whats app) was not helpfull with some problems that we had.
My teenage daughter and I rented a room in january 2015. It was during wintertime so it was cold outside. The heater in the house works perfectly but it was a little bit too warm for us compared to the outside temperature. Opening the only openable window in the living room, or sleeping with the airconditioning on, helped a bit to reduce the heat.
The room is located at an ideal, central place in Lower Manhattan. The beds were fantastic to sleep on. Mike is a very friendly and hospitable man who gave us the feeling that his house was our house.
The apartment is comfortable and cozy, even when all the rooms are full there's no any problem with the use of the bathroom and kitchen. Apartment was cleaned everyday, all the peoples in the apartments follow the rules, that's make easier and convenient the stay. The location is awesome, there is a bunch of great restaurants nearby and there are 3 different train routes available just 3 blocks of distances. there's also a bunch of places nearby to buy NY city souvenirs, ATM's in every corner and the neighborhood is very safe. John is very kind and always try to help you with your stay. Definitely I would stay again for the next visits to NY, 100% recommended.
NYC is always fantastic, the apartment was however not. It was either freezing cold or very warm. It wasn't possible to adjust the heat. 2 out of 6 days there was no hot water at all. No hot water = no shower! Several of the wals was not painted and the sofa was compleatly warren out. Full of holes. The entertains and stears is very dirty and the backyard is best described as slum, with thousands of smoked cigarettes laying among other waste. The worst was however all the bird droppings on old air-conditions hanging from the windows in the backyard . We are talking of years without cleaning. 40 ~ 60 cm high "mountains" of bird droppings. And then on top of that the apartment is approx. 50 meters from Manhattan brigde, with a train passing every 2 minutes, 24/7. You can not belive the noise! Manhattan John (Mike) is a nice guy, but this apartment should newer have been rented out to tourists.
John is a very accommodating host. It is difficult toilet him, understandably, as he is like other New Yorkers, a very busy man.
However, he has a system in place that works. I stayed in this flat for 10 days while looking for jobs, and had many neighbours coming and going without any problems.
The location is a 10/10. Cleanliness 9/10 decor 8/10.. Overall a great bargain for your money.
3 problems I had:
1- Never send mail, wish I knew, but it's really difficult to retrieve mail.
2- Too many people using the shower in the morning. Wake up early. (4-8 ppl)
3-Maintanance needed to be done on the bathroom, but john changed the date for that till after check out.
Overall, I'd stay there again, it was a good experience.
The apartment is equipped the necessary kitchen utensils and new floor covering / interior paint is consistent with renovation, appearance inside clean and tidy. The mattresses must be very old and you hear the springs every time you move in bed. Not used to living in the city the the frequent trains travelling less than a block away on the bridge made sleeping even more difficult. TV reception is poor with an indoor aerial only. Pipes the run from floor to ceiling rattle at times (warm at times ?noise when heating turned on also associated with hissing sound in kitchen). Only one key very difficult with 5 people. Takes a long time to get hot water through the pipes for washing up / shower. (Do not know if any laundry facilities nearby). Need to be fit to carry suitcases up 3 steep flights of stairs.
