Lake Como, which Latin name is Lario, has been for centuries, and still is, source of inspiration for artists and tourists.
Our Lake has been the birthplace of many prestigious personalities, such as the physicist Alessandro Volta, the inventor of the battery; it inspired Alessandro Manzoni (one of the greatest Italian writers) in the draft and setting of The Betrothed.
Nowadays Lake Como still attracts international celebrities who, captured by the beauty of the Lake and the evocative places in its surroundings, decided to buy a house here.
Approximatively 50km far from Milano, set between the Provinces of Como and Lecco, it is the third lake of Italy, after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore, and the deepest (410mt).
The Lake, one of the most important ones in the region of Lombardy, with its peculiar overturned Y-shape, is divided in three branches: the branch of Como in the South-West, the branch of Lecco in the South-East and the branch of Colico in the North.
From all of its shores you may enjoy wonderful panoramas: suggestive hamlets, beautiful villas and blossoming gardens await the visitors who are looking for relaxation, enjoyment and culture in touch with nature.
Numerous gorgeous villas overlook the shores of the Lake.
In Como, the town after which the Lake has been named, there is a Silk Museum, which hosts ancient machines of the silk production, which is a traditional activity of Como.
Como is considered to be homeland to the Italian Rationalist art and architecture; many are the examples of modern European architecture, such as the Novocomum apartment building, Giuliani Frigerio House, the Monument to the Fallen of World War I and the former Casa del Fascio, all designed by Giuseppe Terragni.
In Cernobbio, not to be missed are both the 16th century Villa d'Este and the famous Villa Erba, one of the most important 19th century lake-villas in Italy which nowadays hosts an international exhibition and congressional centre, worth a visit.
Going northwards, you will reach the little town of Ossuccio, famous for the spectacular Comacina Island, the only island of the Lake, and its Holy Mountain which is listed as UNESCO's World Heritage Site.
Villa Passalacqua and Villa Balbianello in the nearby municipalities of Moltrasio and Lenno, where films like Star Wars and Casino Royal were shot, are worth a visit too.
The next village along the same bank is Tremezzo and its beautiful Villa Carlotta, with its terrace gardens and the museum which hosts pieces of art by Canova, Thorvaldsen and Hayez.
The peninsula of Bellagio is the place where the three branches meet themselves, with its elegant aristocratic villas, such as Villa Serbelloni and Villa Melzi (famous for its botanical gardens).
Going down southwards, you will reach Lecco. A visit to Villa Manzoni is a must: it is the seat of Manzoni's museum and the starting point of the touristic itinerary based on The Betrothed.
Going in the opposite direction, northwards, it is possible to visit picturesque and panoramic villages like Varenna, Bellano and Colico, until you will reach the Friars Abbey of Piona.
But the Lake's historical and cultural vocation is not the only one to mention; the wide choice of sports and open-air activities makes it a cherished holiday destination. Swimming, sailing, rowing, windsurfing, water skiing, kayak and fishing are some of the sports which can be practiced in summer.
Those who love hand-glider and paraglider can take advantage of the many favourite panoramic spots on the Lake.
Mountain sports lovers instead can test themselves with rock climbing, wonderful excursions, hiking, mountain biking and horse riding.
There are seven internationally famous golf courses surrounded by nature.
Reaching the mountain resorts from lake Como is quite easy thanks to the good road connections.
In winter the ski resorts Piani di Bobbio and Pian delle Betulle offer many kilometres of well trodden ski slopes, and numerous circuits for cross-country skiing, ski mountaineering and snowshoes.
You can get to Madesimo, Valmalenco and St.Moritz in less than 2 hours by car, for a ski-day or for a simple excursion.
Good cooking is guaranteed, as unique tastes and products play a key role in the wine and food traditions of this area, such as perch fish, the exquisite olive oil, the numerous vegetables (among which the excellent Rogaro's asparagus) and different lake fish specialities, such as the Missoltino, the typical Lake Como dish, meat with gravy dishes, and the typical desserts.
The wine produced on the Lake and in the close Valtellina Valley worth to be tasted too.
It is located in Tremezzo, on Lake Como.
Tourists usually come here to visit the gardens, the villa and its museum.
A magnificent botanical park is part of the villa; inside the building, its rooms are rich of masterpieces.
Between gardens and museum, it occupies 70.000 square meters.
At the end of the XVII century the marquis Giorgio Clerici commissioned the building of a gorgeous abode in a natural hollow, between the mountains and the Lake, surrounded by an Italian garden, in front of a breath-taking panorama overlooking the Grigna mountain and Bellagio.
Thanks to the following owner, Giovan Battista Sommariva, who enriched it with a lot of works of art, the villa reached its apogee of splendour and became a destination which could not be missed on Lake Como. Sommariva, who bought the property at the beginning of the XIX century, wanted part of the garden to be changed into a romantic park; he also wanted the villa to be adorned with masterpieces from Canova, Thorvaldsen and Hayez.
In the middle of the XIX century, the property was bought by Princess Marianne of the Netherlands who gave it to her daughter Carlotta (her name was given to the villa) for her marriage with George II, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen. At the second floor of the villa we can still admire the couple's furniture, objects, paintings and frescoes.
Villa Carlotta's park is very famous for the stunning flourishing of more than 150 types of rhododendron and azaleas which takes place every spring.
But every time of the year is suitable for a visit: the garden's architects through the centuries have created the actual setting that sports a great variety of plants, like the ancient specimens of camellias, citrus and century-old redwood trees, immense plane trees and other exotic plants.
Next to the Ticket office there is a well-furnished bookshop, at the end of the alley an old greenhouse hosts now a café where you may enjoy a nice break.
A visit to the villa and its museums is marvellous, as well as a stroll through its huge garden is relaxing and surprising.
It takes at least a couple of hours to visit Villa Carlotta. Not be missed: the rocky garden, the old garden and the little museum of agricultural tools, where you will find the instruments used in the last century to work in gardens and vegetable gardens.

In the town of Lenno, on Lake Como, a gorgeous and very elegant villa surrounded by a beautiful garden can be admired: Villa Balbianello.
It was built over the ruins of an ancient Franciscan monastery during the XVIII century by the cardinal Durini.
The bell tower and the facade of the church are the only items that still remains from the ancient religious building; they have been deconsecrated and integrated in the structure of the villa.
The last owner, whose name was Guido Monzino, contributed a lot in the current embellishment of the villa; he decided to give it to the FAI (Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano, the Italian National Trust) so that everyone who wishes to see it today can do it.
The garden and the panoramic view are the greatest beauty of the villa: the Lodge of the cardinal Durini is considered a balcony overlooking Lake Como.
The whole villa appears like a peaceful and silent place, where you may find quietness, the ideal destination to spend nice moments between the shadows of the centuries-old trees in the garden and the artistic beauties which are to be found in the rooms inside; these are now integrated in the facade of the villa.
Villa Balbianello is reachable on foot, through a nice 15 minutes walk from the promenade of Lenno (in front of the Lido you will find the pedestrian entrance), into the park of the villa. Otherwise, you may reach it by lake, thanks to the boats leaving from the landing stage next to the Lido.
Opening time from 10.00 to 18.00, from March 14th 2015 to November 24th 2015.

The Comacina Island is about 600mt long and it is the only island on Lake Como.
Ruins of the ancient buildings are still visible nowadays: there used to be 5 churches, destroyed during the 12th century after a terrible battle against the troops of Como.
Today the Island is not inhabited but it visited by many many tourists, who go to the famous restaurant by boat and then stroll on the paths through the ancient ruins. This typical restaurant on the Island is set in a wonderful panoramic spot.
To contrast the ancient curse which dates back to 1169, every meal ends with the Coffee Ritual: spirit, sugar and coffee get stirred and then offered to the guests by the innkeeper, while a bell is ringing. The actual owner has decided to kept this enjoyable and scenic tradition, which still attracts numerous visitors of the Lake.
